The Palace Hotel
While some student choose to live in the buzz of the city centre because of Manchester's extensive and reliable public transport system many students choose to live south of the city. Below are a few guides for the most popular student areas in south Manchester.
Fallowfield
If Manchester was a campus University, Fallowfield would be its campus. Fallowfield is the spiritual home of all Manchester students no matter which of the Universities they attend. With its bazaar of fast food outlets, coffee shops and bars cramming the sidewalks, Fallowfield really is any student's heaven. Not only is Fallowfield itself a haven, the numerous buses which operate through the area and the 20 minute walk to the University for those who enjoy the fresh air, make Fallowfield a convenient location for any student.
Didsbury
Bars and pubs in East Didsbury
If life in Fallowfield is too hectic for you then Didsbury may be just what you're looking for. Slightly more upmarket and with that more expensive, Didsbury is a draw for students with its up market bars restaurants and a selection of local butchers, etc. If you like your food from M&S, Didsbury may be the place for you.
Withington
Withington is just south of Fallowfield and served by the same major bus routes, but has a distinct 'personality', with students and other young residents joining forces with pockets of more traditional family communities to make this a laid-back, yet vibrant little area. Though not as vibrant as Fallowfield or upmarket as Didsbury, Withington has its own individual atmosphere which is best emphasised by the iconic old cinema and the numerous second hand shops in the town.
The 'Curry Mile', Rusholme
Rusholme
Rusholme is synomonous with the many curry houses which stretch down the Rusholme stretch of Wilmslow Road. Situated between Fallowfield and the Universities the area offers cheap affordable student houses with superb links to the city centre down that much vaunted bus route. With a mix of diverse cultures Rusholme provides students with a completely original living experience whilst providing everything they could need on that mile of road which is better known as the 'curry mile'.
Victoria Park
Picturesque Victoria Park is a short walk from the Universities and a short bus journey or energetic walk from the city centre. Popular with students who've previously lived in halls in the area, Victoria Park itself hosts a modest array of outlets which are mainly open during the day. This is compensated as the area is a very short walk from Rusholme’s array of shops, restaurants and bars.
